Education Briefs: An Overview of Back-to-School Changes for Fulton County

Summer is coming to an end for thousands of Fulton County students and their families. The new school year begins Monday, Aug. 11.

The Fulton County School System continues to be the fourth largest school district in Georgia with a projected 2008-2009 enrollment of nearly 88,500 students. This is an expected increase of approximately 2,500 students from the previous school year. The system includes 55 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 15 high schools and five start-up charter schools.

Northview Principal Prepares for Retirement

After six years of dedicated service to the students and faculty at Northview High School, and 30 years in Fulton County education, Peter F. Zervakos, principal of Northview will say goodbye.

Zervakos announced today in a letter to his colleagues, that he would be resigning his position at the end of the 2008-2009 school year.

Fulton County Welcomes 1,100 New Teachers

Approximately 1,100 new Fulton County teachers gathered on Monday for the Fulton County School System’s annual New Teacher Orientation. The event, which runs through Aug. 1, is part of the pre-school year festivities to welcome teachers and help them acclimate to their new classrooms, schools and teaching assignments.

Fulton Schools Invite Parents to Review Curriculum

Since June, the Georgia Department of Education has been receiving comments on its curriculum web site, www.GeorgiaStandards.org, concerning proposed curriculum changes.

Parents are invited to visit the web site and provide input. Follow the link, www.GeorgiaStandards.org, to offer comments and feedback on:

· Social Studies: 6th and 7th grade revisions

· Social Studies: 3-5 and 8-12 grade Precision Review

· Mathematics: K-5 Precision Review

More Merit Scholars Named for Fulton Schools

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced this week that 14 recent Fulton County graduates have been named National Merit Scholars. In addition to the prestigious National Merit Scholar distinction, these students earned National Merit scholarships from participating colleges.

Fulton Schools Pres to Lead State

Fulton County Board of Education president, Julia Bernath, is adding yet another title to her already impressive education resume.

Last month Bernath was installed as president of the Georgia School Boards Association. She was sworn into office June 20 during the association’s summer conference in Savannah and officially assumed duties July 1.

State Names High Performance Principals

Fulton County Schools have been given a little more to boast about. Eight Fulton County School System principals are “High Performance Principals.” The acclaim was recently announced by Gov. Sonny Perdue and State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox.

This year, 112 principals statewide were highlighted for overseeing dramatic improvement in student achievement in their schools.

Fulton Schools Release Stakeholder Results

Shortly after coming on board as Fulton County’s Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cindy Loe created the Stake Holder survey as a way to receive community input.

The results of the survey have now been released with more than 2,800 school system parents, teachers and staff responding to the survey.

Questions on the survey asked participants what they thought school system performed best, concerns they might have, and what one change they would like to see made. Of the respondents, more than 240, or, 8.5 percent said they didn’t have any concerns. Specific answers included:

Fulton Schools Named Among Top 100 Most Musical Systems

Fulton County Schools has once again ranked among the top 100 schools in that nation to promote music among children. For the ninth consecutive year, Fulton County ranked among the top 100 in a nationwide survey of public and private school music programs.

The annual survey identifies the top 100 places to live in America for quality music education. Fulton County is one of only two school systems in the nation to be recognized all nine years the annual survey has been taken.

Fulton School Board Schedules Millage Rate Hearings

The Fulton County Board of Education will hold three public hearings in order to allow the public to review the proposed 2009 budget. The Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights requires the board to hold these hearings due to the fact that the tentative budget does not include a full millage rollback to offset increases in property assessments.
