Four-day Work Weeks: Fantasy meets reality for workers and corps
When I turned sixteen, I received my driver’s license the very same day. There was nothing else more important in my world than going to the DMV and obtaining my laminated ticket to freedom. No greater birthday gift was to be had. A driver’s license meant I could take myself where I wanted to go – provided, of course, I could garner permission to borrow the family car.
A driver’s license was, and remains to a large degree, a right of teenage passage. The cost of that passage was a lot less back then. Gas was about 50 cents a gallon.
My mom insisted I pay my own way with regard to the car, which translated to coughing up the cash for my share of the insurance premium and gas. That meant getting a job.
The job seriously cut into my free time; free time originally meant for driving around absent parental supervision. I only meant to work enough to pay for the gas money – maybe a couple of days each week – but I ended up needing more work hours to pay for the increasing need for gas (and a couple of cute outfits, too).
That was 31 years ago and I’m still working seven days a week to pay for the gas money. And it ain’t 50 cents a gallon anymore.
Now that gas prices exceed $4 per gallon, I’m spending more time “telecommuting.” That is a fancy way of saying that I am still working seven days a week, but not always from my away-from-home office.
Telecommuting, which has been slow to catch on with many employers for fear they won’t be able to monitor their employees’ every move, has been proven time and again to increase employee productivity. Minus all the water cooler conversation held in offices (what did you think of the last Lost episode?), employees focus more on the task on hand and have a greatly reduced stress level, ultimately creating more loyalty to the employer. And now, telecommuting decreases costs to employers and employees vis a vis gas prices.
Gas price increases are forcing all of us to become more creative to save money. Employers in many cities are getting darn right experimental to save on fuel costs, which have risen by nearly 50 percent for some companies.
On Aug. 4, the state of Utah begins the first mandatory shortened workweek in the nation. The “Four-Ten” program will have 23,000 employees working Mondays – Thursdays for 10 hours each day – off on Fridays – at an estimated savings to the state of $3 million.

But people either love the idea or hate it. It’s different and requires a sort of cultural shift in the way we think about working. While some call it progressive and cutting edge, there are concerns from others about childcare, night school students, and second jobs.
