So you live in North Fulton, and you are one of those poor drones who schleps long distances back and forth each day. Gas prices have eclipsed four dollars per gallon, and short of switching to a Vespa, you feel helpless to do anything about it.

If you watch the talking heads on news shows you are hearing from one side that we need to open up as much federal land as possible – on and offshore – to increase domestic oil reserves.

The other side says that is poppycock. They say it will take a decade or more to create new reserves, which will do nothing to help short-term prices.

Who is right?

Well, supply and demand is always the biggest factor when it comes to price, and an oil thirsty world – with unaccustomed pressure from China and India – is inhaling every available drop of crude oil it can get its hands on. Taking action to add to our domestic supply would seem to make sense.

It is also a given that the psychology of panic undeniably contributes to the current speculative run-up in the price of gasoline. Some of this panic could be allayed if the U.S. shows the resolve to begin securing new domestic reserves of crude oil.

You may remember about a decade ago, President Bill Clinton vetoed legislation calling for drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra million or so barrels of production per day? If you study the pros and cons of drilling in ANWR, my guess is you’ll determine that the environmental risk factors are acceptable, when weighed against the economic and national security risks of importing about 60 percent of our crude oil.

However, assuming we get more active in procuring additional domestic oil reserves, it would seem to be short sighted to just stop with additional drilling.

A few years ago, Vice President Dick Cheney sniffed at the need for energy conservation and remarked that is was a noble thing to do, but certainly not the answer. Just the same, conservation is a big part of the answer and should be encouraged. Paying through the nose for gasoline is a great free market incentive for considering a more fuel-efficient car that is not pachydermian in size.

A soccer mom once told me that she insisted on a huge SUV with a massive V-8, because it made her feel safer. I asked if she had ever considered that it might take a couple of miles to bring all that hardware to a full stop, but by that time she was on her cell phone.

With crude oil at $130 per barrel, there is one piece of good news. There is now an incentive to drill more back in the good old U.S.A. It might also be profitable to develop the massive reserves of shale oil in the American West.

We can also go hard after coal and consider converting it to cleaner burning liquid and gas. We can actively increase our nuclear capability to provide electricity to the nationwide grid. Why should we not be getting more than half of our electricity this way? And now, the so-called exotics of energy – solar and wind – have been getting increasingly more efficient in recent years and are beginning to compete more aggressively with conventional sources, particularly with innovative tax incentives at the state and federal level.

I’ve driven a hydrogen car, and although that form of transportation is probably a decade or two away, now is the time to forge ahead with research.

I spent a career in the petroleum business and as a professional and volunteer environmentalist. My view of all this is not bleak; rather, I am convinced that we Americans are uniquely poised to use our traditional ingenuity, our messy but powerful free market system and our age-old determination to accomplish all I’ve listed above – and more. We can do this more quickly and successfully if we choose the correct leadership.

Never again should an American president do as President Bush recently did and go to the Saudis with his hat in his hand to say, “Could you pretty please increase your oil production?” The Saudis politely said no, and they will continue to until we Americans have leverage. That means pulling out all the stops. Whoever is running for office this fall needs to think about that. As voters, so do we.
